What is TOEIC ? (English version)


Have you ever known about TOEFL, IELTS, and TOEIC ? 

Well, three of them are actually the same. It is commonly used to measure the ability of non-native which English is not their mother language. In this time, I would like to tell you about TOEIC. Let’s check it out !

Actually, TOEIC was the same as TOEFL and IELTS, but it has more specific functions. TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) is a test of English language skills to the people which English is not their mother language. TOEIC consist of 2 test i.e. listening and reading. The range score of TOEIC is from 10 to 990. TOEIC test can measure the language proficiency for individuals who is working in the International environment. The TOEIC scores indicates how well a person can communicate in English with another person in general, including communication in education, business, commerce, and industry. This test does not require any special knowledge or a term not commonly used in daily activities.

The TOEIC test is a multiple-choice test that lasted 2 hours consisting 200 questions which divided in two sections :
  1. Listening sections: In this sections examines how well we can understand conversations in English. This sections consist of 4 parts and contains 100 questions that is played in cassette or CD. We will be asked to answer the questions based on an assortment of questions, a short dialogue, and brief recorded conversations in English. Total time to this test is 45 minutes. 
  2. Reading sections: In this section, there will be 3 parts of the test which will examine how well we can understand the text in English. We will read a wide range of material and perform time setting personally in answering 100 questions based on the content of the materials provided to us. The total time of this test is 75 minutes.
We will answer the questions on this test by way of one-letter discolor (A),(B),(C),(D) with a pencil on the separate answer sheet. Although time available is estimated at over two hours, additional time is required to complete a list of questions and short biography of the participants in the answer sheet. Therefore, we should take the time to set up approximately 2.5 hours to take the test.

Well, who are usually follows this test ?
It comes from a lot of institutions, such as :
  1. Employees or staff who are using English in a variety of work environments such as government office, businesses, hotels, hospitals, restaurants, international meetings, conferences, and sport programs
  2. Management, sales staff, and employees the techniques in international business tarde and industry who need English in their work
  3. The prospective participants of the training to be conducted in English.
  4. The individuals who are following training course in English or in the interest of scholarship and visa filing board. 
  5.   Students to measure their progress of learning, graduation requirements, and comprehensiveness in entering  the world of work.
Why we should follow the TOEIC test ? 
            The answer is because the TOEIC test has become an option for more than 6 millions tests annually and participants recognized by 10,000 organizations around the world. As a measurement tool that accurately and objectively measures the English language proficiency, the TOEIC test will enable us to :
  1. To prove our true level of proficiency in English
  2. Meet the requirements for the new offices and or promotion within the company
  3. The assertion/evidence of the level of our professionalism.
  4. To monitor the progress in respect of us in speaking English.
  5. To set our objectives learning.
  6. Involving companies in advancing our English skills.

Furthermore, when and where we can follow the TOEIC test ?
The TOEIC test is available in the entire world. These tests can be carried out upon request of law agencies or other organizations that expect their employees  or the prospective job applicants to take the TOEIC test. In addition, there have been courses, schools and campuses that give the TOEIC test for the students. If the TOEIC test has not been scheduled in our organizations, we can contact the Office of the International Test Centre (ITC) as the ETS official representative in Indonesia to get information when and where we can take a test.

How does the test cost ?
To get an information about the TOEIC test cost in Indonesia, it can be done by contacting the Office of the representative of ITC since it costs the TOEIC test varies around the world.

What scores do I need to get to ‘passed’ TOEIC test ? 
The TOEIC test is not like where we can tested or selves to be ‘passed’ or 'failed'. Not all jobs or tasks require the same level of English-language skills. TOEIC scores scale also allows a person to make the goal that can be achieved and measured an increase in English proficiency.

          Because the test is created specifically to meet the needs to communicate, then the TOEIC test can measure different levels of English language proficiency. TOEIC test allows people to demonstrate what they can do in English. In addition to the Government, many companies are using this test to apply the default value based on the level of English needed needs to put someone in the right position. Many offices and Governments and companies that provide English language training to its staff to help reach the target TOEIC test values that describe more specific taxonomic expertise based on the needs of professional. Schools and colleges use TOEIC as a means of mapping and international certification programs in English. The TOEIC scores can be used to find out the level of English language proficiency and development for students, graduation requirements, including for the preparation of entering the world of work, and further studies.

How  is the contents of the TOEIC test questions ?
Some examples of the arrangement and the situation that we can meet on a TOEIC test  as follows:  
  1. Corporate development: research, product development.
  2. Banquet dinner: Banquet business and informal lunches, receptions, banquet meals, and restaurant reservations.
  3. Entertainment: cinema, theater, music, art, exhibitions, museums, and the media.
  4. Budget and finance: banking, investments, taxation, accounting, bill payment.
  5. General business: contracts, negotiations, mergers, marketing, sales, warranties, business planning, conferences, labor relations.
  6. Health care: insurance media, visiting doctors, dentists, clinics, hospital. 
  7. Housing/property: construction, specifications, lease-purchase, gas and electricity service.
  8. Manufacturing: Assembly, quality control, plant management.
  9. Offices: Board meetings, committees, letters, memoranda and e-mail phone, fax, Office furniture and fixtures, the regulations of the company.
  10. Human resources: employee recruitment and admissions, hiring new employees, resignations, salary, promotion, advertising, jobs, retirement and awards.
  11. Purchase: for purchases, the latest Office equipment, delivery of the goods, invoice.
  12. Technical areas: Electronics, technology, computers, laboratories and equipment, technical specifications.
  13. Travel: trains, airplanes, taxis, buses, ships, ferries, tickets, schedule information and announcements in airports and stations, car hire, hotels, reservations, delays and cancellations.
If we have physical limitations, are we still be able to take the test?
          If we want to take a test, but we have physical limitations we may contact ITC to discuss those needs at least 2 weeks before the test date.

How about the evidence that we have been following the TOEIC test?
There will be a certificate for those of us who have followed this test
